New Firm K2 Publicity Launches, Will Handle Charlie Heaton’s ‘As You Are’

Veteran publicists Kara MacLean and Kevin McLean, former co-heads of the Los Angeles office of Canada’s Touchwood PR, have officially partnered to launch boutique PR firm K2 Publicity, Variety has learned exclusively.

The duo announced K2 on Monday at the American Film Market. Their first official project under K2 will be the U.S. theatrical campaign for Votiv Film’s “As You Are,” which stars “Stranger Things” actor Charlie Heaton and Amandla Stenberg, and won a special jury prize at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.

Through their previous ventures together, the duo’s clients have included companies such as sales agents Protagonist Pictures, Mister Smith Entertainment, Alma Cinema, APA Agency, and VMI Worldwide, as well as domestic distributors Magnolia Pictures, FilmRise, Synergetic Distribution, Outsider Pictures, and Quiver Digital

K2 will provide a hybrid of traditional and digital PR services and strategic consulting to clients in both the domestic and international markets. Services will focus on campaigns for domestic and international film festivals, corporate publicity for production and sales companies, domestic theatrical and digital releases, international rollouts, as well as other arts and entertainment clients.

“The film industry has changed drastically in the past few years and the PR landscape has been slow to follow,” the duo said. “We are excited to offer filmmakers a new approach to launching their films at festivals, theatrically, and beyond with more innovative and cost-effective options than the traditional larger agencies.”

The duo also regularly partners with international publicist Martin Marquet on festival campaigns and will continue to do so with K2 beginning with the upcoming 2017 Sundance Film Festival.

‘As You Are’ Official Trailer

‘As You Are’ Trailer: ‘Stranger Things’ Actor Charlie Heaton Stars in Coming-of-Age Drama (Exclusive)

The movie hails from promising 23-year-old filmmaker Miles Joris-Peyrafitte.
The trailer for the 1990s-set coming-of-age drama As You Are promises no nirvana for at least one of its characters.

The movie, which premiered at Sundance earlier this year and where it won the special jury prize, follows three teens — Charlie Heaton, who made a big splash earlier this summer being part of the Stranger Things cast (he played budding photographer Jonathan Byers), Owen Campbell (Boardwalk Empire) and rising Hunger Games actress Amandla Stenberg — who form a bond that is tested and maybe untethered while living in a small town.

The movie, which hails from promising 23-year old filmmaker Miles Joris-Peyrafitte, impressed THR critic David Rooney, who praised the title for its “lived-in performances of its head-turning young cast” and character moments that are “beautifully observed.”

The film, which also was nominated for the grand jury prize at Sundance, will be released by Amazon in 2017. It had its international premiere this week at the San Sebastian Film Festival.
